Urban Interventions, 2025

Ammar Abo Bakr

mural, street art

Urban Interventions is a site-specific installation that celebrates Cairo’s glittering calligraphic ads—hand-painted works that blur the line between street art and public communication. Drawing on the city’s vibrant visual culture, the project reimagines these hyperbolic, sequin-inspired texts through garments, movement, and community collaboration, spotlighting the unseen artistry woven into Cairo’s everyday streets.

About the Artist

Ammar Abo Bakr ‘Dibbanah’ is a multidisciplinary artist from Egypt, excelling as a muralist, installation artist, production designer, painter, and draftsman. Initially rooted in academic art, he emerged as one of Egypt’s leading street artists during the Egyptian Revolution, documenting its events through large-scale public murals. In response to post-revolution restrictions, he adopted pasting techniques for expansive public works and developed mixed media installations in Europe and North Africa. His practice is deeply embedded in Egypt’s marginalised subcultures, particularly Sufi festivals ‘Moulid—مولد’. Abo Bakr’s art fosters dialogue, celebrating pop culture while challenging socio-political narratives imposed by power structures. Notable works include "The Prophet" in Brussels and "The Possessor of Time" in Cologne. Co-founder of the ‘Mahrousa’ Association, he preserves artistic traditions and has expanded into video and film projects since 2016, collaborating with prominent artists and founded 'Mankash'. His commitment to public art and cultural dialogue continues to shape his innovative approach to multidisciplinary installations.
