Untitled, 2025

Juan Caicedo

installation

The intended piece is a flag and flagpole installed guerrilla style in in-between places in various cities. The flag depicts the image of a palm tree blowing in the wind in the direction of the pole with the background of a blue sky, with no horizon or other landmarks.

The image of the palm tree will never blow the same direction as the wind, symbolizing the eternal struggle of resistance that overcomes everything. If possible i’d like to expand the first location of the work, by inviting the segment of artists that have been invited alongside myself by Sebastian Betancur to do an exchange of works, where -if interested- i’d exchange a copy of the flag which they could fly in their countries in Bahamas, Lebanon, Qatar and Iran, for a digital image of a palm tree that is meaningful for them. The idea is that the image they send me, would not be expected to be a one off piece by them, but an image of a palm tree that is unique to their visual culture, lived experience, aesthetic preferences or sense of humour.

About the Artist

Juan Caicedo (b. 1981) is a Colombian artist and professor at the National University of Colombia.

He currently lives and works in Medellin. Caicedo uses art to explore challenging aspects of life, such as the perception of violence, the body, and the notion of normalcy. He employs humor and the absurd to deconstruct semantic relationships and interpretations of everyday situations.

Recently, his work has focused on site-specific projects that use context as a material, remixing or rearranging environments and their relationships to create new situations. Caicedo’s work has been featured in several exhibitions and public projects in Colombia, Europe and west Asia over the past two decades.
