Mingjing Yu

multidisciplinary

This project unfolds within a factory residential compound near Ledu Town at the foot of Mount Emei in Sichuan, China - a relic of the Third Front Construction era. As a third-generation descendant of this historical initiative (born in 1995), my grandparents migrated here in 1970 under Mao-era national mobilization. The Third Front Construction, a Cold War strategic project, secretly established military-industrial complexes deep in southwestern mountains to manufacture aircraft and artillery, sustained by revolutionary slogans that propelled generations to sacrifice their youth in these remote areas.

Now existing in liminal space between utopian visions and fading reality, this compound houses:

  1. Elderly original factory workers (mostly octogenarians)

  2. Yi ethnic migrants from Daliang Mountains seeking education opportunities

  3. Remnant infrastructure whispering Cold War histories

I hope this will be a co - creation project, where we'll work together with the children and women in the residential area. The specific direction of the project will gradually emerge during the process of getting along. The whole process of the project will be recorded on video and then displayed.

About the Artist

Mingjing Yu is a multidisciplinary artist working across participatory actions, video, photography, sound, and installation. Her practice explores memory, collective subconscious, and emotional connections, using metaphorical materials and intuitive methods to create subtle sensory experiences.

Yu’s work reflects on themes such as industrial migration, family histories, and social identity, transforming private experiences into shared landscapes. Through participatory projects and material interventions, she examines the fragility of emotions and the dynamic relationship between body and society.

A graduate of Chelsea College of Art, Yu is based in Shanghai. Her works have been exhibited at Ac Cube (Chengdu), Koganecho Art Center (Yokohama), and AVG Space (Chengdu), among others. She has also participated in residencies including Koganecho Air and OCAT Shenzhen, continuing to explore the connections between space, memory, and identity.
