/pop/, 2025

tech-enable

/pop/ is a prototype for a temporary interactive experience in public space. It uses computer vision and sensors to subtly activate audiovisual responses as people move through the environment. The work does not require deliberate engagement—everyday gestures such as walking, commuting, or simply passing by are enough to trigger short bursts of visual and sonic feedback. The system detects bodily presence and movement through a sensor-based setup, translating those inputs into ephemeral combinations of sound and dynamic imagery, projected onto surrounding surfaces or displayed on screens. These micro-interventions aim to momentarily shift perception, inviting people to become aware of their presence and movement within a shared space. Instead of functioning as a spectacle that demands attention, /pop/ quietly integrates into the rhythm of public life. It appears and disappears in response to bodies in motion, turning ordinary transit into fleeting encounters with digital material.

This work is a continuation of W1AN’s ongoing interest in embodied interaction, perceptual systems, and the porous boundary between digital logic and physical reality. /pop/ invites play and reflection through ambient participation, treating the public not as an audience to perform for, but as co-authors in a responsive environment.

The proposed equipment setup prioritizes security and discretion by using a hidden webcam and a single projector. This minimal and portable configuration is easier to monitor and helps ensure the safety of the components. Site research is ongoing, and depending on security conditions, the artist is also considering the possibility of installing a physical screen structure. They plan to regularly check in on the installation area during open hours to make sure everything functions smoothly and remains secure.

In terms of visual direction, the artist resonates with the suggestion to lean toward minimal and abstract elements. This approach aligns with their intention to emphasize embodied audience interaction, particularly in public spaces. They are currently developing a series of visual experiments and are open to sharing their progress as the work evolves.

About the Artist

W1AN (Wanzhuo Cheng) is an artist from Shenzhen, China. Her practice spans installation, computer vision art, and human-computer interaction design. She works across disciplines using sensors, programming, and computer graphics to explore multisensory interactive experiences. While most of her work originates in software-based environments, she is increasingly focused on extending digital content into physical space, seeking to break free from the confines of the screen and embed her work into real-world contexts.

Her practice centers on the fluid relationship between the body, perception, and the physical world. By exploring the integration of airflow, light, and spatial elements with digital technologies, she investigates the dynamics of the digital body and embodied interaction. Her works emphasize transient yet palpable moments of resonance that emerge in the present.
